Project Update: Los Alamos, November 2024

In the Fall of 2023, Mid-America Golf embarked on an exciting journey to breathe new life into the beloved Los Alamos County Golf Course. Nestled at the base of the Jemez Mountains atop the Pajarito Plateau, with its picturesque setting and loyal community of golfers, this project was both a challenge and a privilege to be a part of.

This project was made even more rewarding by the opportunity to collaborate with two exceptional golf course architects—Forrest Richardson of Forrest Richardson Design Associates and Todd Schoeder with IconGolf Studio. Their vision and expertise guided every step of the renovation, and it was a true pleasure working under their direction.

Our mission was clear: to preserve the character of this iconic course while introducing modern enhancements that would elevate the experience for players of all levels. We performed the following renovation work at the course:

HOLES – three brand new golf holes
GREENS – three different types of renovation range from new green construction, to core out of existing greens to a “drill and fill” program of an existing surface.
TEES – all new tee complexes throughout the entire course
BUNKERS – All new bunkers complete with the BETTER BILLY BUNKER liner system
IRRIGATION – Adjusted the RAINBIRD irrigation as we made our adjustments through the work zones
DRAINAGE – Updated drainage where necessary
GRASSING & LANDSCAPING – Sodded, seeded and hydro-mulch the new turf areas and planted new trees

Every project presents its unique hurdles, and this was no exception. From navigating unexpected weather conditions, to ensuring minimal disruption to the course’s operations, our team worked diligently to keep the project on track. At the heart of this project’s success was Trevor Leaper, Mid-America Golf’s lead Project Superintendent. His masterful oversight and attention to detail ensured the renovation was an exercise in precision, delivering results that exceeded expectations.

As we near completion of the Los Alamos County Golf Course renovation, we’re filled with gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to such a cherished community space. This project is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and a shared passion for the game of golf.
